The largest tropical forest reserve in the country, the almost 2 million acres of Calakmul boasts some the largest populations of many endangered species like the jaguar and white-lipped peccary. Besides the abundance of wildlife, there are also an abundance of Ancient Maya archeological sites, including the reserve namesake who defeated Tikal twice during the Classic Period. Some very innovative conservation work has been done by Pronatura Peninsula de Yucatan www.pronatura-ppy.org.mx/, who will be joining us on this engaging trip. We will learn about the conservation history, challenges and successes with an amazing mix of natural areas and Ancient Maya sites.
