Destroying wetlands could release "carbon bomb" – The world's wetlands - threatened by development, dehydration and climate change- could release a planet-warming "carbon bomb" if they are destroyed. Wetlands (including marshes, peat bogs, river deltas, mangroves, tundra, lagoons and river flood plains) account for 6 percent of Earth's land surface and store 20 percent of its carbon. Felipe Calderon, President of Mexico supports WILD9
The President of Mexico, Felipe Calderon, expressed his support to WILD9 through an official letter, in which he says that he has received with approval the news of the realization of "such an important event". He also states that "the distinguished members of the Congress" will confirm Mexico's potential, and that the Congress will deal with subjects of interest for the world and for his government.

Wilderness issues discussed at COP 9 in Bonn during the Convention on Biological Diversity. Canada’s Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, held a speech at the Convention on Biological Diversity held in Bonn (Germany) with remarkable focus on wilderness conservation and the challenges it represents in the present times.

Intergovernmental Trilateral Commission (Mexico-US-Canada) officially endorses WILD9. After the meeting held in Veracruz in May 2008 an official communication was issued in which ITC “strongly supports the active involvement of the Government of Mexico […] in the planning and organization of WILD9 and related activities”, providing an essential platform to move forward for what would be the first intergovernmental specific agreement on wilderness

World Commission on Protected Areas (IUCN) named WILD 9 as an official meeting venue for 2009 At the Durban +5 meeting in Cape Town, South Africa (April 2008), during a formal review meeting of the World Parks Congress (Durban, 2003), the WCPA named WILD 9 as their targeted meeting place for 2009, for conservation and protected area professionals from throughout the world.
