Brendan Mackey

Brendan Mackey is a professor of environmental science at The Australian National University, Canberra. He is an expert in the carbon dynamics of terrestrial ecosystems, and the relationships between biodiversity, ecosystem services, climate change, and human land use. Brendan was a member of the 2nd CBD AHTEG on biodiversity and climate change, and an author on the recent CBD report Forest resilience, biodiversity and climate change.

Brendan Mackey es profesor de ciencias ambientales de la Universidad Nacional Australiana de Canberra. Es experto en la dinámica del carbono en ecosistemas terrestres, así como en las relaciones entre biodiversidad, servicios ambientales, cambio climático y uso humano de la tierra. Brendan fue miembro del 2o. AHTEG de la Convención sobre Diversidad Biológica (CBD), en materia de biodiversidad y cambio climático, y uno de los autores del reciente informe de la CBD titulado “Resistencia forestal, biodiversidad y cambio climático”.

His 2008 report, Green Carbon, helped highlight the role of primary forests in carbon storage and climate change mitigation. With colleagues Keith and Lindenmayer, their recent paper in the Proceedings of the National Academies of Sciences presented a re-evaluation of forest biomass carbon stocks from the world’s most carbon-dense forests. His recent paper with Harvey Locke, The nature of climate change, calls for an integration of UNFCCC and CBD and harmonisation of their respective policies and measures; which is the theme of his contribution today. Professor Mackey is a member of the IUCN Council and chairs it Climate Change Task Force. Brendan is also a member of the Earth Charter International Council.

En su Informe de 2008, titulado “Carbono Verde”, ayudó a destacar el rol de los bosques primarios en el almacenamiento del carbono y la mitigación del cambio climático. Con sus colegas Keith and Lindenmayer, publicó recientemente un artículo, en Proceedings of the National Academies of Sciences, donde se presenta una reevaluación de las reservas de carbono almacenadas en forma de biomasa forestal en los bosques más densos del planeta. En su más reciente artículo, publicado en colaboración con Harvey Locke y titulado “La índole del cambio climático”, hace un llamado a la integración de la Convención Marco de las Naciones Unidas sobre Cambio Climático (UNFCCC) y la Convención sobre Diversidad Biológica (CBD), así como a la armonización de sus respectivas políticas y parámetros de medición, mismo que constituye el tema de su aportación a este Congreso. El Profesor Mackey es miembro del Consejo de la IUCN y preside su Fuerza de tarea de Cambio Climático. Brendan también es miembro del Consejo Internacional para la Carta de la Tierra.
